RYA VHF Marine Radio (SRC) Course

The classroom-based course takes 7 hours. The written exam and practical assessment lasts about 2 hours., and follows the course. There is a requirement for students to also undertake 3 hours of pre-course study, set by Findhorn Watersports.

Upon successful completion, you’ll receive the RYA Short Range Certificate – a legal requirement for anyone using a VHF/DSC radio on a UK-flagged vessel.

What you’ll learn:

  • Routine, distress, urgency and safety communications

  • DSC functions

  • Setting up and using a VHF radio correctly

  • Hands-on radio practice with realistic scenarios

  • Rules and regulations governing radio use

Course format:

  • Pre-course reading (approx. 3 hours)

  • 1-day classroom (9:00am – 4:30pm)

  • End-of-course exam and assessment by an independent RYA assessor.

The exam is conducted after the course on the same day (exams run 1630 to 1830hrs) – you do NOT need to book a separate exam session. Students are required to be 16 years plus in order to take the exam. The SRC exam fee is £76 and is payable directly to the RYA and is separate to the fee that you pay for the training course.
