RYA VHF Marine Radio (SRC) – Online course

Flexible online learning – You can pause, repeat sections, and study in short sessions or longer blocks to suit your schedule.

Our online SRC course gives you the freedom to learn at your own pace, from anywhere, on desktop, laptop or tablet.

SRC training course subjects include: 

  • Routine operation of marine VHF radio including Digital Selective Calling

  • Correct VHF channels (frequencies) to be used for each type of communication

  • Distress, emergency and medical assistance procedures

  • Ship to shore communication

  • Practical use of Marine VHF DSC training radios

  • Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS)

  • Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRB)

  • Search and Rescue Transponders (SART)

You’ll learn how to use a marine radio correctly, understand distress and safety procedures, and gain the confidence to communicate effectively at sea.  Throughout, you’ll have access to experienced RYA instructors for guidance and support.

Assessment & Certification

Once you’ve completed the online learning, you’ll book a short practical and written assessment at our centre.

The Exam: The exam following the training course is a combination of a written theory test and practical assessment in the use of Marine VHF DSC radios. Candidates must be 16 years or older on the day of the exam.  The SRC exam fee is £76 and is payable directly to the RYA and is separate to the fee that you pay for the training course. Exam slots can be booked directly with our office.
