Course Overview

RYA Level 1: Start Sailing
Introduction to sailing with a focus on steering, boat handling, and basic safety.
Emphasis on developing confidence and control on the water.

RYA Level 2: Basic Skills
Builds on Level 1 and teaches more refined techniques for sailing independently.
Covers essential sailing manoeuvres, rigging, launching, and recovery.
Combined, this course provides a solid foundation for future sailing, club participation, or progression to more advanced RYA modules.

Who is it for?
Adults aged 16 and over
Suitable for complete beginners and those with limited prior experience
Ideal for individuals, couples, or groups seeking a practical and rewarding outdoor learning experience.

What You’ll Learn
Boat setup and controls (rigging, launching, and landing)
Basic sailing techniques and terminology
Tacking, gybing, and points of sail
Capsize recovery and safety procedures
Wind awareness and sailing theory
Sailing in different wind directions
Coming alongside and picking up moorings
All training is delivered with a strong practical focus, supported by short theory sessions ashore. We use a variety of dinghies to suit different learning needs and weather conditions.

Course Format
Duration: 5 days, from 0915hrs to 1645hrs each day
Class Size: Maximum 6 students per instructor to ensure quality instruction
Location: Findhorn Bay – a sheltered tidal estuary offering ideal training conditions

RYA Certification: Successful completion results in an RYA Level 2 certificate – the industry standard for independent dinghy sailing.
All Equipment Provided: We provide boats, wetsuits, buoyancy aids, and safety equipment. Participants should bring warm layers, suitable footwear, and a towel/change of clothes, along with a packed lunch. We provide hot drinks.
Supportive Environment: We foster a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere where everyone can build skills and confidence at their own pace.

After completing Level 2, participants can progress to:
RYA Seamanship Skills or Start Racing
Club sailing membership and practice
Powerboat Level 2 (for safety cover and further on-water skills)
