Junior RYA Stage 3, 2 day Dinghy Course

By the end of the course, sailors will be able to helm a dinghy unaided in moderate conditions, make confident decisions afloat, and demonstrate a good understanding of core sailing principles.

Who is it for?
This course is designed for young people aged 8–16 who have completed RYA Stage 2 or have equivalent experience. Participants should already be comfortable sailing a dinghy under supervision.

What’s Covered
Rigging and launching unaided
Sailing in all directions in light to moderate winds
Tacking and gybing with improved technique
Basic racing rules and introductory race practice
Man overboard recovery
Coming alongside a boat or dock
Basic meteorology and tide awareness
Instruction is primarily practical, delivered on the water in single- or double-handed dinghies, with theory integrated into daily briefings and debriefings.

Course Format
Duration: 2 days – 9.15 – 4.30pm
Group Size: Maximum 6 participants per instructor
Location: Findhorn Bay – sheltered and well-suited to intermediate skill development

What Parents Can Expect
Safety First: All sessions are delivered in accordance with RYA safety standards. Safety boat cover is present at all times.
Qualified Instruction: All instructors are RYA-certified and experienced in working with young people.

Progress Reports: Instructors provide individual feedback and progress updates at the end of the course.
RYA Certification: On successful completion, sailors receive the RYA Stage 3 certificate—an essential step towards youth sailing independence and a gateway to more advanced courses and club sailing.

Gear and Equipment: All boats, buoyancy aids, and wetsuits are provided. Participants should bring suitable footwear (wetsuit boots or old trainers you are happy to get wet), a towel, and a change of clothes as well as lunch and snacks and a water bottle.

Next Steps
After achieving Stage 3, sailors are encouraged to continue developing through:
RYA Stage 4 (crew/helming in double-handers)
Youth sailing clubs and race training
Assistant Instructor or Seamanship Skills (for older teens)
