Junior RYA Stage 1, mornings Dinghy Course

Course Overview
– 5 sessions, each lasting 4 hours (20 hours total)
– Maximum 6 students per instructor
– All equipment provided, including wetsuits and buoyancy aids
– RYA logbook and certificate upon completion

Course Schedule
Sessions run during school holidays and selected weekends:
– Morning sessions: 9AM – 1PM

What Your Child Will Learn
Basic Sailing Skills
– Rigging and preparing a boat for sailing
– Understanding wind direction and basic weather awareness
– Launching and recovery with assistance
– Steering and controlling boat speed
– Understanding the basic principles of sailing

Safety Knowledge
– Essential safety equipment and its use
– Basic rules of the water
– Awareness of other water users
– Some knowledge of tides and local conditions
– Capsize recovery drills in controlled conditions

Personal Skills
– Building confidence on the water
– Working as part of a team
– Communication skills
– Problem-solving abilities
– Environmental awareness

Requirements
– Must be water confident
– Minimum age: 8 years
– Maximum age: 14 years
– No previous sailing experience needed

What to Bring
– Swimwear
– Towel
– Old trainers or wetsuit boots
– Sun protection
– Warm layers – even the high summer, it can be chilly in the wind.
– Packed snacks and drinks (we will supply hot chocolate or hot squash)

Upon completion of Stage 1, young sailors will have the foundation skills needed to progress to RYA Stage 2, where they’ll develop their abilities further and learn to sail independently.
